Bob Dylan's 'Like a Rolling Stone' Came Alive 50 Years Ago Today

Fifty years ago today, in Studio A at Columbia Records, they gave it one more try. Michael Bloomfield plugged in his Strat, the one he'd brought from Chicago without a case that winter. Paul Griffin moved from organ to piano. Sensing a opportunity, Al Kooper, who was going to play guitar until Bloomfield showed up and scared hell out of everyone else, bluffed his way onto the organ bench, telling producer Tom Wilson that he had a great organ part ready to go. Wilson rolled tape. Kooper was half-a-beat behind on every chorus, which happened to be perfect. And, like all the great folk tales from everywhere in the world, the song began exactly as it was supposed to begin, because it came from that timeless place where all mundane journeys end and all mysteries have their beginnings.

"Once upon a time..."
